Sauna Heater Sizing Chart
As we mentioned above finding the proper electric heater for your sauna is essential to any DIY sauna setup. If done properly the sauna should warm up completely in around 20-30 minutes. If it takes longer than that then you might have purchased the wrong sized heater or it might be broken.
When sizing your sauna, a general rule of thumb is that a heater needs 1 KW to heat 50 cubic feet of space. This general rule of thumb is used by most sauna manufacturers and is correct in most cases. If you have an outside sauna or have a high ceiling in your sauna then this rule might be a little off and you might need to purchase a larger heater.
It also should be noted that most sauna rooms have a ceiling height of 6-7 feet. They are purposely short to contain as much heat as possible. Since heat rises, a sauna heater will need to produce a lot of heat to warm up a sauna with larger ceiling height.
With that being said here is a good example of calculating a sauna heater:
If you have a sauna room measuring 6’x6’x7′ its volume would be 252 cubic feet. You then divide this by 50 and get the proper KW needed for your sauna room, which is 5KW.
(6 x 6 x 7 = 252) (252/50 = 5.04)
